THE HISTORY OF WOOD LOGS
Wood logs - the oldest known type of fuel for humanity. Since ancient times, wood has helped humans prepare food, warm their living environment, and simply survive during cold seasons. The industrial revolution occurred much later, and during that time, coal became the predominant fuel. Unlike coal, wood logs as a fuel belong to the environmentally friendly group of biofuels. Collecting wood logs from forests for heating and cooking purposes was a crucial aspect of life during the Middle Ages.
WHERE DO WOOD LOGS COME FROM
Wood logs can be found wherever there are forests. They can come from live trees, including those that are diseased, as well as from the cutting, processing, and splitting of seasoned logs. Typically, wood logs are not extensively processed and maintain their natural log shape. Wood logs are considered renewable resources, but the demand and consumption of this fuel must correspond quantitatively to the forest's ability to renew itself. Wood logs are often dried before use, although they can also be supplied wet and dried naturally before being used.
HOW IS WOOD LOG TIMBER PROCESSED
Trees in the forest are cut down using chainsaws. Branches are removed, and the prepared logs are transported to a further processing area. The logs are cut to the desired length and split using hydraulic log splitters. The split logs are prepared for drying and stored in free-standing stacks or specially constructed structures. Naturally, the wood logs dry as they are exposed to sunlight and wind. They are stacked slightly above the ground to allow for proper air circulation.
WHAT UNITS ARE USED TO MEASURE THE QUANTITY OF WOOD LOGS
The most common lengths for wood logs are 33 cm and 50 cm. In countries that use the metric system, wood logs are sold in cubic meters. However, other units of sale are also possible. For example, in Australia, wood logs are sold by weight in kilograms or tons. In England, wood logs were measured in cords and faggots, which corresponded to a length of three feet and a girth of two feet.
WHICH WOOD LOGS BURN MOST EFFICIENTLY
Undried wood logs contain about 65% moisture, while dried logs contain up to 20%. Dried wood logs have higher useful heat energy. Different types of wood logs burn differently, producing varying amounts of smoke, tar, or sparks and affecting chimney clogging, among other factors. The combustibility of wood logs is determined by the amount of heat they generate. The key properties of highly combustible wood logs are wood density and moisture content. Dense wood logs such as oak, ash, birch, and beech are classified as high-density firewood. However, dry wood logs always burn best.
STORAGE AND PRESERVATION OF WOOD LOGS
By purchasing dried wood logs, you will not only save time but also space. The cheapest option is to acquire wood logs that are dry, split into equal parts, and neatly stacked on wooden pallets. You only need to ensure where you will store them. Well-prepared wood logs are easier to store and can be kept dry. If you store wood logs outdoors, they should be protected from rain and moisture, and good air circulation should be ensured.
